EDMONTON - Alberta is holding its first Open Farm Days this month, with over 40 farms across the province showcasing their operations.

The Rock Ridge Dairy Farm, a goat milk supplier north of Red Deer, will offer tours of its processing plant followed by cheese and milk tastings.

At Brown Eggs and Lamb, near Lacombe, visitors can tour a flour mill and see chickens, pigs and sheep.

A bison ranch near Mayerthorpe, a llama and rabbit farm northwest of Grande Prairie, and an organic poultry and beef operation east of Edmonton are also participating.

The free farm tours will be staged on Aug. 25.

As well, on Aug. 24, chefs will team up with local producers to create a variety of farm-to-table culinary events.

Open Farm Days have been held in other parts of Canada for about 10 years.

Tourism in Alberta's rural communities contributes over $1.5 billion annually to the provincial economy, and Open Farm Days is a step toward seeing that figure grow, said Tourism Minister Richard Starke.
