Hull City AFC to be renamed Hull Tigers

Hull City will begin life in the Premier League with a new name, Hull City Tigers, because the owner thinks the existing one is "common."

Owner Assem Allamis is rebranding the club while also removing the Association Football Club moniker which has been part of the name since 1904.

The Egyptian-born businessman told the Hull Daily Mail newspaper: "Hull City is irrelevant. My dislike for the word 'City' is because it is common. City is also associated with Leicester, Bristol, Manchester and many other clubs."

Describing City as a "lousy identity," Allamis said: "I don't like being like everyone else.

"I want the club to be special. It is about identity."

Allam took over the northeast England club in 2010 following its relegation from the Premier League.
