Downsview man wants more info about dangerous freight

A Downsview man wants to know more about the way dangerous freight passes through the city in the wake of a deadly train derailment and explosion in Lac-Megantic, Que., last month.

Anthony Fernando has been contacting rail companies to learn more about the kind of freight that passes through Downsview.

Fernando said other Downsview residents have told him they have been surprised to learn "the same toxic substances that we saw in Lac-Megantic travelled through our railway line," as did the train involved in that tragic explosion.

The Lac-Megantic explosion left 47 people dead and destroyed much of Lac-Megantic's downtown.

The news of the train derailment tragedy was additionally upsetting for residents of Downsview, where thousands of people were forced from their homes in the midst of a deadly industrial propane explosion five years ago.

Fernando is contacting rail operators in an attempt to find out what kind of dangerous goods pass through the area.
