VANCOUVER - Vancouver police have recommended criminal charges after a man set off a marine flare inside the city's BC Place stadium during an MLS soccer match.

A news release says the incident happened Saturday evening as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the San Jose Earthquakes.

Police say a 43-year-old man allegedly lit a flare in the second-level seating area and placed it under an unoccupied seat, prompting security guards to extinguish the flames with fire extinguishing.

The news release says a number of fans had difficulty breathing because of the smoke, including one woman who was transported to hospital for treatment and later released.

Security staff located the man and police officers arrested him without incident.

Police say they're recommending charges of mischief, criminal negligence and common nuisance against the man, who remains in custody.
