Going back to school is always a drag, but at least it gives kids an excuse to hit the mall (with parents in tow) and score some stylish back-to-school outfits and accessories. And when it comes to stocking up for school without spending a fortune, we've got one word for you: accessorize. We've scouted out some of the top fashion accessories for your kids that will help them define themselves and stand out from the crowd.

Backpacks

Top Fashion Accessories For Back-To-School

Backpacks

Backpacks are the one thing that your little one will be wearing day in and day out, so make sure theirs is one they can't wait to show off. There are endless backpack options out there so shop around for one that totally matches their personality and style. For instance, Jansport’s Trans model backpacks come in a variety of fashionable patterns -- a far cry from the usual black. They’ll be so excited when they find one that they may even look forward to stuffing it full of homework assignments (for the first few days, anyway).

Locker Accessories

Help your kid create a locker that will be the envy of their friends. There are plenty of useful accessories available for lockers including magnets, mirrors, wallpaper and even mini chandeliers. Or create your own -- magnetic frames are perfect for fun pictures of them and their friends.

Their Phone Case

Kids carting phones and mini computers around in their backpack can be a bit mind-boggling for those of us who grew up in the pay phone generation, but these days a child's iPhone is probably their most prized possession. Help them ensure their phone doesn't look like everyone else's by finding them a fun and funky cover. If you're having trouble finding a unique design for them, let them create their own with photos of their friends or even a celeb crush (a One Direction phone would probably make your daughter the focus of all her friends, hint hint).

Scarves and Wraps

A colourful, vibrant scarf or wrap can completely change an outfit, so invest in a few that your child can stuff in their backpack and layer on when it gets cold. Floral patterns are really hot for girls right now and boys always look dashing in stripes.

Shoes

Shoes are something your child will get a lot of use out of, and yet they're also one piece of the outfit that needs to be as trendy and cute as possible. Sneakers are always a good option because they're comfortable and practical -- opt for a trendy brand like Converse. Do you have a little budding fashionista who wouldn't be caught dead in casual footwear? Stock up on a few pairs of cute flats that she can pair with any outfit and store in her backpack if necessary.

The Right Jeans

Jeans have been the standard school uniform for cool kids since the dawn of time and things haven't changed. Shop around for the perfect pair and don't be afraid to get a little crazy -- Cherokee coloured jeans are very popular right now. Make sure that you’re around for the fitting, but let your kid have free reign of the cut and fit -- no one wants to see a child dressed like a miniature version of their parents, thank you very much.

Socks

Forget the standard black-and-white variety packs of socks -- fun, colourful designs on socks are a must for kids.

Cardigans and pullovers As the weather gets colder, layering is key for keeping kids warm. Make sure you stock up on colourful sweaters like a trendy Cherokee cardigan that your child can pair with multiple outfits and store in their locker for chillier days.
