Basements flood as heavy rains hit parts of Montreal

Portions of Montreal were inundated yesterday as a slow moving storm dumped as much as 45 mm of rain in less than an hour.

The heaviest rains hit Montreal North, Ahuntsic-Cartierville and Anjou around 7:30 p.m. last night, triggering floods. Montreal firefighters received nearly 100 calls at the height of the storm.

Firefighters cut off electricity and gas to the worst flooded areas and helped pump water out of soggy basements.

Around 15 homes were flooded. The Red Cross was called in to assist a number of residents who weren't able to return home.

Quebec provincial police closed a portion of Highway 25 at Souligny Avenue for two hours because of the quick-rising waters.

The floods subsided overnight.
