B.C. SPCA fires Victoria branch manager

The B.C. SPCA says it won’t change the way it provides animal care in Victoria despite firing its branch manager.

Penny Stone was dismissed this week, and the former assistant manager Cory Bond quit last month. Both have suggested their departures are due to changes head office wants to make at the Victoria shelter.

Spokesperson Lorie Chortyk denies those claims, but admits the personnel changes have raised concerns with some staff and volunteers.

"There's individuals involved that people have built personal relationships with and we definitely understand that there's loyalties there," she said.

"But we've been ... meeting over the past couple of days with our staff, with our volunteers, and I think they're looking forward to the future."

Chortyk says the SPCA has nothing but respect for Stone and Bond, but it cannot disclose the reasons for their departures because of privacy concerns.
