Claude Giroux has surgery on finger after golf accident

Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux was injured playing golf on Thursday in Ottawa.

The native of Hearst, Ont., had surgery on his right index finger after a golf club shattered.

Giroux is expected to be out for 5-6 weeks.

"Claude Giroux had successful surgery this afternoon on his right index finger performed by Dr. Katherine Boyd at the Ottawa Civic Hospital in Ottawa, Canada," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said in a statement. "Giroux was golfing today when his golf club shattered and splintered into his index finger. Although there were no broken bones, there was some damage to his extensor tendons in his finger."

The 25-year-old signed an eight-year contract extension on July 4 after registering 48 points in 48 games last season.

Giroux is one of 47 players invited to Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp, which runs Aug. 25-28 in Calgary in preparation for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
