RCMP officer flown to hospital after traffic stop near Grande Prairie

A RCMP officer from the Spirit River detachment was flown to hospital after being injured during an altercation at a traffic stop north of Grande Prairie Thursday.

The constable stopped a vehicle near the town of Wanham Thursday afternoon, after reports that the vehicle had been driving erratically.

Police say an altercation occurred during the stop and the officer was injured. He was flown by helicopter to a local hospital, and is now in stable condition.

“We don't know the extent of the injuries," said Cpl. Carol McKinley.

She says police don’t yet know if a firearm was involved in the incident. McKinley says they have no one in custody at this time, and are continuing to investigate.

“We’re certainly canvassing the public for any information that will help provide us with some further avenues and encourage anyone to contact either our Spirit River detachment or Crime Stoppers.”
