The infection is potentially fatal and can develop after humans are exposed to the hantavirus through the droppings, urine or saliva of rodents such as deer mice.
Early symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and respiratory distress.
