Driver targeted pedestrian in fatal hit-and-run, say police

A Lower Mainland man is facing charges for allegedly deliberately hitting and killing a pedestrian with his vehicle in Surrey, B.C., on Saturday.

Homicide investigators say Robert Paterson, 40, was struck by a pickup near 106 Avenue and 135A Street at around 12:30 a.m. PT Saturday and died en route to hospital.

Based on evidence collected from witnesses Christopher Griffith, 31, was arrested on Saturday.

On Tuesday morning police announced Griffith had been charged with criminal negligence causing death and driving while prohibited.

"Evidence retrieved thus far by IHIT supports the theory that this was a deliberate act on the part of the driver," said a statement released by Sgt. Jennifer Pound on Tuesday.

Griffith was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday. The police investigation into the incident continues.
