Car surfing stunt leaves 49-year-old B.C. man dead

A man from Sicamous, B.C., was killed while car surfing on the town's main street last week, RCMP confirm.

Troy Charlton, 49, was found lying on the street severely injured early last Wednesday morning.

At first investigators thought it was a hit-and-run, but now they say Charlton was seen leaving a party riding on the hood of a car.

Witnesses told police Charlton was thrown from the car when it came to a sudden stop.

Christina Laforge, 46, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death and impaired driving causing death.

Sicamous RCMP Sgt. Dave Dubnyk said it appears alcohol was a factor in the incident.

"This kind of behaviour is shocking regardless of age. Given the fact that they're in their 40s is, ah — at the end of the day, regardless of age, it's a tragic incident that really has its effects on a small town."

Laforge is scheduled to appear in court in Salmon Arm in September.
