The Conservatives might be slamming Justin Trudeau over his admission that he smoked marijuana as recently as three years ago, but the Liberal leader got a thumbs-up from one high-profile supporter. Star Trek actor George Takei praised Trudeau's pot stance in an interview with Global News on Friday.

"It’s going to be a great positive for him," the actor said on The Morning Show "It serves Canada well to have a politician who can be known for his honesty and forthrightness,” he added.

Trudeau responded to Takei's kind words on Twitter.

Takei, who is best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu on the sci-fi show, also praised Canada's progressive stance on gay rights.

The actor, an outspoken advocate for gay rights and openly gay himself, also spoke to HuffPost Canada on gay rights in Russia and the Sochi Olympics.

"The Russians are taunting the IOC with the homophobic laws that they pass. They give license to the thugs and the hooligans -- you know how they've been carrying on. This is the time for Russians to rethink," he said.
