Justin Trudeau Marijuana Revelation: HuffPost Readers React

What You Had To Say About Trudeau's Pot Revelations

On Thursday, we broke the news that Liberal leader Justin Trudeau smoked marijuana at a party three years ago. He also told HuffPost Canada's Althia Raj that this wasn't the first time he had smoked pot.

Trudeau said he’s smoked pot five or six times in his life. “It has never really done anything for me,” he later told HuffPost in an email.

“When the joint went around the room, I usually passed it around to the next person,” he said.

“(But) sometimes throughout my life, I’ve had a pull on it.”

“Sometimes, I guess, I have gotten a buzz, but other times no. I’m not really crazy about it.”

The revelations sparked hundreds of comments on our site, on our Facebook page and on Twitter.

Many commenters seemed to shrug off Trudeau's statement and didn't think it was a big deal.

"Smoking a joint in the privacy at home in the evening vs. many MP's have a 3 martini lunch every day then getting behind the wheel (impaired) to work the rest of the day..

I'll choose the guy who smokes a joint in the evening over the boozers any day," says user Ed Tanas.

Others also felt that the revelations would help him at the ballot box.

"I like Trudeau. He's getting ahead of the game by laying out his "transgressions" before the Conservatives can dig them up and spin them. While the Conservatives will still run with it and spin it they will at least being doing it after Justin says "yep I did it. And?" I really hope this guy has a good platform in 2015 because I want to vote for him," says SweetTreat80.

Later on Thursday, the Tories came out swinging and slammed the Liberal leader's pot use.

Our commenters responded vigorously to MacKay's comments as well.

"Yes, smoking a joint is so much more serious than election fraud and appointing dubious figures to the Senate who cheat the taxpayers and then proroguing parliament to avoid answering pesky questions," said William Muller.

Most notably, comedian Rick Mercer tweeted a photo of a young Peter MacKay drinking out of a beer bong and asked pointedly if that was a good example for Canada's youth.

"At least he wasn't using military equipment for his personal fishing trips," John Toth said.

We also had plenty of readers praising Trudeau's honesty on the subject. "An honest politician? Holy crap on a cracker! I don't think that can hurt him at this point in Canadian politics," says Anne Wilson.
