Montreal borough budget freeze overturned

Montreal city hall has reversed a decision to freeze borough budgets, bowing to pressure from borough officials.

The executive committee had originally opted to freeze the budgets in order to prevent an estimated $200-million shortfall for the administration that takes over after this fall's election.

But several city council members spoke out against the ruling, saying former Mayor Michael Applebaum had promised their budgets would be adjusted according to inflation.

At Tuesday’s meeting, council decided to leave the budgets as they were, and let the next administration decide how to pay for the difference.

Voters go to the polls for the municipal election on Nov. 3.
