There were a couple panicked cries of "Mom!" caught on video.
Presumably, the girl was trying to spit out the words, "the kangaroo is trying to drown the dog!"
But it may have all been lost in the heat of some serious kangaroo-on-dog violence.
In any case, no one appears to have intervened when dogs managed to surround a kangaroo in an Australian pond -- and their quarry managed to get a grip on one of its aggressors, holding its head under the water for a few perilous moments.
But the blame following a YouTube upload of the encounter on Friday is falling squarely on the shoulders of the dog owners.
"Put the camera down and control your animal," wrote one viewer. "The kangaroo was just trying to defend itself.”
Others suggested the confrontational canine was asking for it.
According to The Independent, the owner of the Great Dane, Anthony Gill, says he and his four-year-old daughter did try to drag 'Max' away.
While kangaroos are not known for attacks on dogs, or humans for that matter, it isn't the first time such encounters have turned violent.
A very similar situation was widely reported in 2009, when an Australian man and his dog surprised a slumbering kangaroo, near Melbourne. The dog, again, appeared to be the aggressor, chasing the animal into a pond.
The kangaroo managed to really get a grip on its antagonist, pinning the dog underwater, while slashing the intervening owner with its hind paws.
"I thought I might take a hit or two dragging the dog out from under his grip, but I didn't expect him to actually attack me,'' dog-owner Chris Rickard told the Herald Sun.
"I was stuck having to hold onto the dog with both hands because it was half drowned and I couldn't really see anything because the kangaroo just ripped into me. It was a shock at the start because it was a kangaroo, about 5 feet high, they don't go around killing people."
The kangaroo relinquished its grip after being elbowed in the throat. The owner was hospitalized.
