The death of a child in Hobbema, Alta. is being treated as suspicious by Mounties.
Hobbema RCMP responded to a call of an unresponsive toddler after 5 a.m. on Sunday.
Efforts to resuscitate the child were unsuccessful, RCMP said.
Police performed CPR on the 18-month-old but were unable to resuscitate the child, according to The Edmonton Sun.
A neighbour who didn't want to be identified told the Edmonton Sun she awoke to loud yelling and crying from the home next door.
“One of them came running to my house to borrow the phone to call an ambulance and I heard them all yelling, ‘She’s not breathing,'" she said.
RCMP say firearms were not involved and there is no information to suggest that the incident is gang related.
“Our investigators are speaking to witnesses, collecting evidence to try to find out what happened,” Sergeant Josee Valiquette, a spokesperson with the RCMP’s K division, told Global News.
Earlier this year, three young gang members were sentenced for manslaughter in the death of five-year-old Ethan Yellowbird, who was hit, as he slept, by a bullet fired through the wall of his home.
The Samson reserve and three others in the Hobbema area have been beset for years by shootings and stabbings as rival gangs fight over the drug trade. More than half of the 14,000 people who live in the area are under 18 years old.
Two months after Ethan's death, his aunt was shot and killed outside the home next door.
An autopsy for the toddler has been scheduled for Tuesday.
