A man trapped for 30 minutes in the basement of a burning house in Markham was rescued early Monday after making a frantic cellphone call to family members for help.

Fire broke at around 1 a.m. in a detached house at Eastpine Drive, located in the Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East area.

Fire crews arrived to find the house fully engulfed in flames.

Several people managed to get out of the house before discovering that one person was missing. The family received a phone call from a man unable to escape from the basement.

The call was eventually passed on to a dispatcher, who directed fire crews to the back of the house.

The man was rescued and taken to hospital. His condition is not known.
