A Toronto mother is expected to appear in court today charged with the attempted murder of her 11-year-old son.

- Mother charged with attempted murder in son's beating.

The 32-year-old mother of four was charged after police discovered the boy badly beaten early Friday inside an apartment building near Burnhamthrope Road and Highway 427.

His mother is facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessities of life. Police are not releasing the woman’s name to protect the identity of her son.

He remains in critical condition and is breathing with the help of a ventilator.

"At this point he has some severe injuries to his head and to his abdomen," Det. Steve Laramy told CBC News. "Hopefully he pulls through. Unfortunately if that doesn't happen and he succumbs to his injuries, the charges will be upgraded to murder."

Two of the woman's other children have since been placed with the Children's Aid Society.

The mother broke down during her first court appearance on Tuesday. Other family members who attended the appearance were also upset.

Laramy said the case has taken a toll on the police officers who responded to the call on Friday and said some have undergone counselling.
