Cyclist dies after downtown collision with taxi

A 31-year-old man is dead after his bicycle collided with a taxi early Thursday morning on René Lévesque Boulevard.

Montreal police said the cyclist was travelling east near Peel Street at around 1 a.m. when he collided head-on with the cab.

“It’s unknown at this time why this happened,” said Const. Danny Richer.

The cyclist died at the scene.

The taxi driver, a man in his 60s, was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

The intersection was closed for several hours as collision reconstruction experts investigated.

It’s the 16th fatal collision in Montreal this year.
