Vancouver Rain, Lightning Storm Delays Flights, Cuts Power (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

LOOK: Storm Thrashes, Mystifies B.C.

A powerful thunderstorm thrashed Metro Vancouver with rain and lightning on Thursday night, knocking out power to thousands of customers, delaying flights and lighting up social media with incredible photos.

The storm left 6,000 people without electricity in areas stretching from West Vancouver to Maple Ridge, while a gas line also ruptured in Port Moody, The Province reported.

The weather resulted from a low-pressure system moving north off the Oregon coast, bringing rain and thunder to southwest B.C., The Canadian Press reported.

Flights at Vancouver airport were grounded for several hours. Planes weren't allowed to taxi and crews stopped unloading baggage over safety concerns, CTV News reported.

The airport went back to regular operations after the lightning passed.

The storm also took its toll in the Okanagan, where 2,200 customers were left without power as the storm moved through Vernon, Castanet reported.

But the storm proved deadly for three horses that were killed in Maple Ridge after being struck by lightning while huddling under a tree, The Maple Ridge News reported.

The storm mystified social media users from Vancouver to the Sunshine Coast, who posted incredible photos on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram as lightning and rainbows stretched across the sky.
