The West Shore RCMP have caught a violent robber who escaped with a convicted murderer from the William Head Federal Correctional Centre near Victoria Friday night.

Dean Allen Thomas Benton, 56, was apprehended without incident in Colwood Sunday morning, after an officer happened to see him walking down the street.

Fellow escapee Brian Peter Patrick, 44, was taken into custody in Langford, near Belmont High School, Saturday morning after a tip from the public.

The pair escaped the minimum-security facility, which is about 25 kilometres west of Victoria, around 11:00 p.m. PT on Friday.

Police say the two men waited for low tide and managed to skirt fencing on the shoreline to get away.

Patrick was serving a life term for second-degree murder, while Benton was serving an eight-year sentence for multiple robberies.
