Trial begins for man accused of killing woman in drug deal

Testimony is slated to start this morning in a Kelowna courtroom in the trial of a man accused of killing a young woman during a drug deal.

Joelon David Atish Verma has been charged with first-degree murder and robbery in connection with the death of Brittney Lee Irving, 24.

Irving was last seen leaving a Kelowna motel in April 2010. Police say she was taking a large amount of marijuana to a drug deal.

Irving's abandoned truck was later found near Kelowna, and her body was eventually found on May 25. Police have not said how Irving died or where her body was found.

Verma has been in police custody since his arrest in June 2010.

The jury trial is expected to last six weeks.
