Const. Lesley Smith says the man broke his leg on Saturday while out in rural terrain near Dease Lake that was a three-hour hike away from the nearest road.
The man's 29-year-old hunting partner managed to walk out and call for help, but Smith says an air ambulance couldn't land in the area because of the rugged terrain.
An RCMP helicopter that happened to be in the area came to the rescue, and the injured hunter was transported to the Stikine Health Centre in Dease Lake.
Police says the hunter was well prepared and by the time emergency crews arrived, he had already made crutches for himself and was planning on staying the night.
The injured man is now recovering at home after being fitted for a cast.
