TIFF 2013 Fall Fashion Trends: Julia Roberts And More Celebs Embrace Autumn (PHOTOS)

Fall Fashion Trends We Saw At TIFF

TIFF 2013 has officially ended, so now we must enter a period of thought and reflection. The first thought: did all of us avoid making idiots of ourselves in front of the movie stars. (Let’s hope so.) The second: how exactly was everyone dressed? (The films themselves we’ll be thinking about until the Academy Awards, obviously.)

To answer the second question, we went through the last week and a half of Toronto Film Festival red carpet photos, and collected the ones we thought embodied the best Fall 2013 trends. Did we miss anyone? Let us know.

Elizabeth Olsen

Fall Fashion Trends At TIFF 2013

Autumn fabrics like tweed are a must-do for this and every fall, but Olsen manages not to get lost in its heaviness thanks to the front slit and sleeveless style of this Proenza Schouler number. She also pays tribute to the 1920s with the dress’ loose waist and midi hemline, but brings it into this century with heavier, open-toed shoes and commanding black straps.

You can’t go wrong with a fitted waist and A-line skirt, and Jennifer Garner obviously understands that. But in addition to opting for one of the go-to silhouettes for the season (and foolproof length), she adds depth to her Dolce & Gabbana piece through lace and satin embellishments – another must-try for Fall 2013.

Lace made another appearance on the TIFF 2013 red carpet, but this time with an Altuzarra suit that gave a nod to the season’s gentlemen-wear trend. Keeping it feminine through its sleek, fitted style, she topped it off with Louis Vuitton heels that maintained the outfit’s delicacy – though if your suit is more on the “Annie Hall” side, pair with heavier shoes to balance the extra fabric.

In case you needed a reminder that wearing white after Labour Day is an absolute must, the “12 Years A Slave” star brought it to the film’s premiere with her floor-length Prada gown embellished with gold jewels. This is actually a great way to combine winter white and the metallic trend since wearing them together actually helps avoid being overwhelmed by either.

The cutout trend isn’t for everyone, but if you’re feeling a little risky this season, take Kristen Wiig’s lead and channel Oscar Carvallo’s Couture Fall 2013 collection which saw cutout dresses and tops. Like the “Hateship Loveship” actress, you can also mix and match cutouts and patterns (as she does with her Vena Cava ensemble) to make your look a little more casual.

Florals? For Fall? Kind of groundbreaking – unless you’ve been eyeing collections like Erdem’s, who showcased the trend in their collections this season. Clearly “The Fifth Estate’s” Alicia Vikander got the memo, especially since she donned the label at the film’s premiere and opened the festival with a bang.

Celebrating the premiere of “Dom Hemingway,” Madalina Diana Ghena showed up to the Fox Searchlight TIFF 2013 party in Chanel embracing both the ‘60s mod look and the sheer trend, which helped offset the heaviness of the fabric. You can do the same as the season progresses, or do the reverse by pairing sheer fabrics with sweaters or jackets to keep your look season-appropriate.

And lace appears again -- yet this time to dress up Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s metallic Reem Acra piece at the Fox Searchlight party. However, while autumn’s infatuation with gold is arguably dressy enough, it’s the lace fabric that keeps it wearable on both the red carpet and to less A-list events. Though if you don’t get around to wearing something like this over the next few months, relax: dresses like these are classic for a reason.

Leather is everywhere this autumn, so thank goodness for Toni Collette, who opted for a leather coat to wear with her Narciso Rodriguez panel dress. And while the dress would’ve been fine solo (especially thanks to its mix of black, white, and sequins), it’s the leather jacket that gives the look a little more oomph – which is exactly the point of leather this Fall.

Hemlines rose to the occasion this season (we’re here all week, guys), and at the premiere of “Osage: August County,” Julia Roberts gave her blessing to the look via her red lace Dolce & Gabbana mini dress. Through nude heels, long sleeves, and a high collar, she kept the short cut balanced, while the hint of lace solidified its place at TIFF – and on seemingly everyone else this autumn.
