Vancouver Laneway Home Auctioned For Charity (PHOTOS)

LOOK: Vancouver Laneway Home Auction

Who said living small meant living simply?

Certainly not the makers of this 516-square-foot, custom-built H & L Laneway Feature Home — Alair Homes and Modern604.

The increasingly popular laneway homes are housing units typically built in the backyard of a pre-existing residential lot and into the back lane.

But here's an opportunity to buy one all ready to be plopped down on your waiting plot — and all in a good cause.

This tiny house will be auctioned off live at the Interior Design Show West (IDS West) at the Vancouver Convention Centre on Sept. 21. There is no minimum bid, but the house is valued at $500,000. All proceeds from the sale will support the Alzheimer's Society of B.C.

These very Vancouver additions were introduced to the city in 2008 by then-mayor Sam Sullivan, but a few have also popped up in Toronto.

'The Art Of Living Small'

The H & L Laneway Home has a bedroom, bathroom, combined living room and kitchen, covered carport and tiny courtyard, all squished into the amount of space usually reserved for a suburbanite's living room.

It boasts moving steel walls, multi-functional kitchen appliances, and a concealed home theatre system controlled entirely by an iPad, all features that "expand the feeling of size within this small home, by giving a visual extension and awareness of space beyond typical walls".
