A child is in hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed in a rural community outside of Prince George, B.C.

Officers were dispatched to Shelley, east of Prince George, just before 8 a.m. PT Friday following reports a child had been stabbed outside a home.

"On arrival, police and paramedics located a child suffering from what appears to be stab wounds," said RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass.

"The child was transported by the B.C. Ambulance Service to the University Hospital of Northern B.C. with serious injuries."

The child is expected to recover.

Douglass says a young person who is known to the victim has been arrested.

RCMP say no further details will be made available because the suspect is considered a young offender.
