Man found dead in SQ operation

Montreal police have been asked to investigate the death of a man in Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel, whose body was found during a provincial police operation.

Officers with the Sûreté du Québec went to a residence on l'île aux Fantômes at 1:15 a.m. today to carry out an arrest warrant, according to Montreal police spokesman, Const. Raphael Bergeron.

"When they went to arrest this man, he was found dead inside his residence. At this time, the investigation was transferred due to the intervention, but basically no fired shots, nothing from what I was advised," said Bergeron.

Bergeron said Montreal police investigators have yet to confirm the identity of the man who was found dead.

The Ministry of Public Security has ordered an independent investigation and Montreal police said they will meet all those involved in the operation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police have not yet said why an arrest warrant was issued against the man in question.
