A humpback whale was recently captured on video jumping out of the waters of Howe Sound, in a sign that the species is recovering in the area.
The video, which was posted to YouTube by user Warren Butler, shows a whale breaching just south of Brigade Bay on Gambier Island on Sept. 26.
The whale's presence is a sign that the species is making a comeback after whaling activity wiped out the animals in the early 20th century, Caitlin Birdsall, BC Cetacean Sighting Network coordinator at the Vancouver Aquarium, told Global News.
“It’s been really unusual to see a humpback around,” she told the network. “But they have made a comeback in the last 10 to 15 years.”
This isn't the first time that whales have been caught on video in B.C. waters recently. An orca pod was filmed near Galiano Island in late August, while in June, orcas were seen swimming into the Burrard Inlet beneath the Lions Gate Bridge.
