Toronto-based Belmont Meats Ltd. is voluntarily recalling certain Compliments brand Super 8 Beef Burger patties because of an E. coli risk, and after illnesses linked to the product were reported.

The eight-ounce burger patties, sold frozen in packages of six with the UPC code of 0 55742 37055 3), have been sold in the four Atlantic provinces and Ontario in the following stores:

- Sobeys

- Foodland

- FreshCo

- Price Chopper

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning consumers not to eat the burgers, which may have been contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7.

"There have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product," a CFIA news release says.

The burgers may not look or smell spoiled but could cause serious illness, the CFIA says.

Symptoms of E. coli contamination include severe abdominal cramping and diarrhea, and more seriously, could cause seizures or strokes.
