The storm tore into several homes and businesses in the town of Wayne, Neb., injuring at least 15 people.
"It's tough to hold tears back," said Ken Chamberlain, mayor of the community of 9,600, where at least three tornadoes were spotted.
"I work on that side of town, I know business owners on that side of town. I know people who use the airport and there are some pretty valuable things. The amount of loss there is heartbreaking," Chamberlain told reporters.
Four tornadoes were reported In Iowa, including one that cut a three- to 4.8-kilometre path through farmland Friday evening. State officials said that twister missed any population centres.
The storm system also brought heavy wet snow to parts of Wyoming and South Dakota.
Officials were warning drivers to stay off the roads in the Black Hills and in eastern Wyoming, where reports of 12 to 15 centimetres of snow were common.
