KINDERSLEY, Sask. - A community in west-central Saskatchewan has declared a state of local emergency due to health concerns about smoke from a landfill fire.

The town of Kindersley is warning people to keep their windows closed and to avoid inhaling the smoke.

Officials are awaiting the results of air quality tests being done by the Saskatchewan Environment Ministry.

The fire at the landfill started on Monday night and the flames spread due to windy conditions, but the blaze has been contained.

Town officials say they expect the fire to continue to burn for a few days and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

Declaring a local state of emergency allows the town to spend money to deal with a problem with the help of the provincial government.
