It appears Falardeau fell to his death at some point after excusing himself to take a bathroom break early Sunday morning at the restaurant.
He'd been eating poutine with his friends at around 3:45 a.m. when he got up to go to the washroom but never came back.
"We waited outside for about ten minutes, and a friend, Simon, went to look in the washroom. There was no one there," said Falardeau's friend Ariane Lortie. "We looked for him inside and out, and that was the last we saw of him."
A missed call for help?
Falardeau's friend Simon Malenfant said at that moment, Jérémi must have still been alive.
Malenfant's cell phone rang. It was a call from Falardeau.
"I had a bit of alcohol in my blood, and it took me a bit of time to get out my cell, so I missed his call," Malenfant explained. He tried in vain to call his friend back and sent him several text messages, but got no response.
Police officers found Falardeau's body behind the restaurant's terrasse, wedged between a wall and a small shed.
"To end up there, in the position he was in, it was likely a fall that caused his death," said police spokesperson Pierre Poirier.
Poirier said investigators believe his death was accidental.
It appears the man might have slipped out onto the terrasse, found himself locked out of the restaurant and climbed up onto the wall of the terrasse, thinking it was safe to jump. Poirier said Falardeau may not have realized it was a two-storey drop to the ground.
An autopsy is still to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
