He had just been drilled into the stanchion — luckily for him it was rounded glass — on a hit-from-behind by Nashville Predators forward Mike Fisher in the third period of Toronto's 4-0 win Thursday night.
Fisher was dealt a five-minute major and a game misconduct while Franson was forced out of the game with a bloody towel draped over his face and the trainer escorting him to the dressing room.
Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said after the game the blue-liner's visor cut his nose on the play, but there were no further updates immediately available.
The hit invoked memories of a similar incident involving Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty, who was levelled into the stanchion by Boston Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara a couple of seasons ago. Pacioretty suffered a broken vertebrae on the play.
