Support from sex workers may not be the political backing Fort McMurray MLA Mike Allen is looking for right now.
Allen, who was arrested in St. Paul, Minnesota this past July during a police prostitution sting, has been asked by sex workers to continue serving as MLA for the Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo riding – and they've even go so far to offer the beleaguered politician their services.
"Alberta sex workers wish to assure MLA Mike Allen and all Albertans that his activities in Minnesota would be lawful, private and welcome in Alberta, where Sex Workers are pleased to consider respectful requests for personal services," The West Coast Cooperative of Sex Industry Professionals (WCCSIP) and The Canadian Adult Entertainment Council (CAEC) said in a release issued Thursday.
"In addition, sex workers in Mr. Allen's riding of Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo want him to continue as their MLA. We feel he made a mistake taking his business out of Alberta to puritan St. Paul, Minnesota, but sex workers in his constituency are still pleased to have an MLA who values the services they offer," the release continued.
Allen apologized for his dalliances earlier this year and resigned from caucus, but has remained in the legislature as an Independent.
In his apology, he said seeking prostitution "has not been a pattern of behaviour in the past, and clearly, it will not be in the future," so the boost from sex workers is probably not the type of attention he wants to attract at this point – especially when legislature is set to resume Oct. 28.
“From what I can tell, he has done a great job as an MLA and loves his community,” Susan Davis of CAEC told Fort McMurray Today. “We feel like he needs a little support when everyone is being so mean to him, that we shouldn't judge a person's reasons for wanting intimacy.”
Allen has been charged with a gross misdemeanour of solicitation of prostitution in a public place. The charge carries a maximum one-year sentence and a $3,000 fine.
