NANAIMO, B.C. - The Mounties say a 19-year-old from Ontario man is facing impaired driving charges after a crash on Vancouver Island that sent five young people to hospital.

A news release says the crash happened late Friday night in Nanaimo, where a Hyundai Accent with five people inside that was stopped and waiting to turn was broadsided by a Chrysler Intrepid.

Police believe the Intrepid, driven by a 19-year-old man from Ontario, was travelling very fast and sped through a red light.

All five people in the Accent were injured, including the driver, an 18-year-old woman from Nanaimo, who was airlifted to hospital in critical condition.

The others suffered a range of injuries including broken bones.

The news release says the driver of the Intrepid was arrested and is facing charges of impaired driving.
