Alberta RCMP officer assaulted in routine traffic stop gone bad

SHERWOOD PARK, - A man from Sherwood Park, Alta., is facing a slew of charges including assaulting a police officer as the result of a routine traffic stop at the Enoch Cree First Nation townsite.

RCMP say an officer was attacked after a man was pulled over for speeding and a search turned up drugs.

They say the suspect jumped back in his vehicle and took off with a police helicopter and a canine unit in pursuit.

Andrew Ryan Bruggeman, 27, is also charged with resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and impaired driving.

Bruggeman made his first court appearance Wednesday morning.
