TORONTO - After a day of delays the last three of the Toronto Zoo's elephants have finally hit the road bound for California.

Toronto city council voted in 2011 to send Toka, Thika and Iringa to the PAWS animal sanctuary near Sacramento after animal rights advocates voiced concern for the welfare of the three aging pachyderms.

The journey by truck is expected to take about 50 hours.

Several handlers and veterinarians are travelling with the elephants.
