REGINA - Saskatchewan's growing population means the number of students enrolled in schools this year is up by more than 2,000.

The province says there are now 170,582 students — up 1.27 per cent from last year.

Most of the 28 school divisions have more students, although 10 divisions have reported decreases.

Premier Brad Wall said Wednesday that the government's focus this fall will be on getting more schools, more quickly.

Wall said there is a real demand for more student spaces across the province, especially in major centres.

Statistics Canada said in September that the number of people living in Saskatchewan passed the 1.1 million mark for the first time.
