Air Canada cancelled several morning flights to Vancouver from Victoria, Nanaimo, Prince George, Terrace, Smithers, Castlegar and Seattle, and some afternoon flights from Prince Rupert and from Calgary. A number of Air Canada regional departures from Vancouver for the morning and afternoon have also been cancelled.
Central Mountain Air and Hawkair have cancelled scheduled morning flights from Vancouver to Terrace, and evening flights scheduled for the trip back.
Flights between Victoria and Seattle, which was also fogged-in Saturday morning, have also been cancelled into the early afternoon Saturday.
Fog persists over South Coast
Environment Canada said Friday that the large fog bank sitting over the southwest coast would persist over the weekend. On Saturday morning, a special weather statement advised that low-level moisture is being trapped in the Georgia Basin by a ridge of high pressure that is expected to persist into next week.
"As a result, extensive fog and low cloud is expected through the weekend for regions of the inner South Coast. The weak October sun may burn through some of the fog and cloud allowing for some brief sunny breaks in the afternoons," Environment Canada said.
The weather service said that the primary areas affected are Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria, Fraser Valley west (including Abbotsford), the Sunshine Coast, the Southern Gulf Islands and East Vancouver Island.
Environment Canada predicts that wind patterns could change early into the work week, pushing the fog out of some areas.
