U of T student laid to rest after being struck by vehicle

A University of Toronto student was laid to rest Monday, just a day after he was struck and killed in an alleged hit and run in Scarborough.

Rafsan Alam, 22, died in the early hours of Sunday morning, after he was struck while crossing Kennedy Road and Eglinton Avenue East.

He was just blocks away from his home at the time that he was struck. Alam was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police later arrested 24-year-old Anthony Sowkey, who faces six charges including impaired driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death.

CBC News has learned that the accused had his driver’s licence suspended for drunk driving earlier this year.
