Apple announced its new iPad and iPad Mini at an event on Tuesday. The latest generation of Apple's popular tablets, the iPad Air, will ship Nov. 1st.
The new device, the iPad Air, is thinner and lighter than previous versions of the product. It will retail in the US$499. The iPad Mini will retail for US$400 and will be available later in November. Both devices will come with Apple's Retina Display. The Canadian version of the Apple store has the iPad Air listed at $519 and the iPad Mini at $419 in Canada.
The devices come as the once-dominant California tech giant faces stiff competition from rivals such as Amazon and Samsung for the tablet market, a market that Apple virtually created a few years ago when it launched the iPad.
At the event, Apple also announced that its latest version of OS X, dubbed Mavericks, would be free and available for download today. The latest version of Apple's operating system for desktops and laptops would make OS X more similar to iOS7, the software used on its iPads and iPhones. Apple also announced that iWork, Garage Band and much of its software suite would also be free to Apple users.
Finally, the tech company also announced a new high-end desktop, the Mac Pro, that will retail for $3,000. The company also refreshed its MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops.
