CALGARY - A Calgary police officer has been charged with assaulting a suspect.

It's alleged the officer used excessive force while trying to restrain a suspect on Dec. 11, 2011.

The incident was investigated by the Professional Standards Section and the file was forwarded to the Edmonton Crown prosecutor's office, which directed a charge of common assault be laid.

The member was charged Thursday and has been suspended with pay.

Police say the officer's name won't be released because it happened as a result of the execution of his duties.
