The judge handed the sentence down to Jose Renteria, who had pleaded guilty. He was charged with dangerous driving causing death, and leaving the scene of a crash.
He will get credit for time served while in custody.
Renteria was driving the Hummer that rear-ended a family van containing the Favila family on New Year's morning. Seven-year-old Jacob Favila was killed in the accident. In an emotional victim-impact statement, the boy's mother told the court how difficult it was for her to carry on without one of her four sons.
Jacob's twin brother also gave a victim-impact presentation, showing a picture of his brother in court.
CBC's Lorenda Redekopp said the scene was "incredibly emotional" also for the accused, who could be seen weeping and burying his face in his hands.
Renteria is not a Canadian citizen, but is from Ecuador. It's not known whether he'll be permitted to remain in Canada after he serves his sentence.
