Distraught man barricaded in Cranbrook motel, RCMP on scene

Cranbrook RCMP have established a perimeter around the Nomad Motel on Highway 3 after receiving responding to a call about a distraught man shortly after noon on Wednesday.

According to Cpl. Chris Newel of the RCMP, the man "made several comments that were very concerning to police that could affect public safety," after they arrived.

It is not clear at this time if the man has any weapons, police say, and ERT are on their way to the scene.

Earlier in the afternoon, police learned of a housekeeper in a nearby room and asked her to stay in the room until it was safe to come out. An RCMP press release issued Wednesday night says the woman was out of harms way by 5:00 p.m. PT.

More details to come.
