Police in Surrey say a man has been arrested after holding a knife to a ten-year-old boy’s throat at a local elementary school on Thursday afternoon.

According to Surrey RCMP, the standoff began at 12:44 p.m. PT when police dispatch received a call about a distraught man at Gabrielle Roy Elementary near 132nd Street and 69th Avenue.

“The information we received at the time is that we had a disturbed male holding, what was described as a 10-year-old and a knife in a threatening manner,” says Cpl. Bert Paquet with Surrey RCMP.

“Our officers immediately engaged our emergency response team along with a negotiator to attend the scene.”

Paquet says that it took about nine minutes for negotiators to secure the release of the boy “with no injuries whatsoever” and convince the man to put down the knife, but that a single taser was deployed during the arrest.

The attack appears to be random, and Paquet says there is no known relationship between the man and the boy he held hostage.

“At this point in time, we’re still looking at the attributing factors to find out what took place leading up to this incident.”
