Kananaskis Country Public Safety responded around 9:53 a.m. MT after a Class 2 avalanche trapped the climbers in K-Country. The avalanche hit the climbers, made up of three separate climbing groups, and buried one female completely.
"The avalanche came down from the Lone Ranger ice climb and struck a group that was on slope," said Duane Fizor, information contact coordinator for the Kananaskis region. "
Several other climbers were partially buried but the group was able to get themselves out of the snow without help from rescue crews.
Several members of the group suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to hospital by ambulance after making it out of the back country.
"Any time you're involved in an avalanche and you get away with non-life-threatening injuries, you can consider yourself very lucky," said Fizor.
None of the climbers were wearing avalanche transceivers or carrying shovels or probes.Suggest a correction
