OTTAWA - Senators have voted to suspend colleague Mike Duffy, a former member of the Conservative caucus, for allegedly claiming improper expenses.

The suspension, which permits Duffy to retain health, dental and life insurance benefits, is to last for the duration of the parliamentary session, which could continue for the next two years.

The motion for Duffy passed by a vote of 52-28, with 11 abstentions. The Senate has already voted to suspend Patrick Brazeau, with a vote on the suspension of Pamela Wallin still to come.
