Albertans joined thousands across Canada on Monday to mark Remembrance Day and honour those who sacrificed their lives in war.
"From the trenches of Europe to the deserts of Afghanistan, we will never forget the sacrifices our veterans have made and continue to make," said Premier Alison Redford, along with a video message thanking those who served.
While many ceremonies were held across Calgary, the city's largest took place at the Military Museums. About 15,000 people attended, CTV Calgary reports.
There was a high turnout of young people and families at the event, according to 660News, where 11 kinds of wreaths were laid on the eleventh hour of the eleventh month.
Edmonton's largest remembrance ceremony was held at the Butterdome on the University of Alberta campus and was attended by veterans, soldiers, Redford, and Edmonton's newly elected mayor Don Iveson, according to CTV Edmonton.
“It’s important to remember why people fought in the various wars,” Travis Young, whose grandfathers both fought in the Second World War, told Global News.
"Today, Albertans gather to remember and honour the sacrifices of veterans in Canada," said NDP Leader Brian Mason in a statement. "On Remembrance Day, we remember the cost of war, and the importance of working for peace," he added.
During the First World War, roughly 68,000 Canadians were killed in four years of fighting. The Second World War claimed a further 47,000 Canadian lives between 1939 and 1945.
The United Nations-led Korean War in the 1950s saw 516 give up their lives. An additional 1,800 Canadians have died either on UN peacekeeping missions, in Cold War training exercises, or in Afghanistan.
