Toronto Police issued a release detailing the moments that led up to the shooting. Around 12:30 p.m., according to police, officers responded to an address on Sherbourne near Wellesley and went to speak to a man.
The Emergency Task Force, the police's special tactical unit, was deployed soon after.
A weapon was fired around 1:45 p.m., and a man was fatally wounded.
Paramedics confirmed with CBC News that they transported one man in life-threatening condition with a gunshot wound to the head. The person was not a police officer, according to paramedics.
The SIU, an arm's length agency that probes seriously injurious or deadly incidents involving police, has assigned six investigators and three forensic investigators to look into the incident. The SIU also probes cases involving allegations of sexual assault involving police.
